my favorite type of activities are literature-based ones.
“how the crayons saved the rainbow” is one of our current favorite books and so we had a “rainbow day” at home. we started the day by reading the book, and then dived into this really fun fine-motor activity.

draw a rainbow, cut some strips of construction paper and lay out some scissors and glue sticks and let the kids go crazy (with supervision, of course!) first, I had them cut the colored strips into smaller pieces! the objective of the activity was for them to match up the small cut pieces and glue them onto the corresponding color on the rainbow. they did a pretty good job for the first few minutes, but they made it their own and Avery pretty much covers the entire paper with glue and cut the strips into 500 pieces. (LOL) but they had fun and it occupied them for a good 30 minutes!

we did some coloring after with coloring pages from From the Pond!

we ended the day with a really fun rainbow dessert!

of course, they went for the gummies first.

a little side note: i love to blog because I find so much joy in sharing our day to day and giving ideas to those who may be looking for things to do! however, i need to peel the curtain back a little to say that I am often nervous to share, in fear that by sharing these things (i.e. the super extra dessert platter that I made), that people will assume that things are ALWAYS ON POINT and that you need to do ALL THE THINGS. (because it’s reaaaaally not, and you don’t!!)
I know that personally, I sometimes get overwhelmed when I see what others are doing in contrast to all that I am not (that’s what sucks about social media…) although I have been so tremendously thankful and blown away by the barrage of amazing toddler activity ideas and free resources that have become made available..I have been a little overwhelmed by it all. sometimes, it can hit us with the pressure to do all the things. however, I just want to say – you do NOT need to do all the things. even if your kids are home from school and you feel the tug to jump into homeschool train at full force and stimulate and engage and interact with them every second that they are awake – lets just remember to enjoy this time! and this unique opportunity to slow down.
lets remember that this is just week one so..let’s pace ourselves! let’s just be faithful, moment by moment – and leave cushion in your heart/day/life to just slow down and be still. that might mean letting go of your hourly schedule of the day to just free play all day. or letting go of this enriching activity you planned to let them watch some tv. or taking a nap with the kids instead of trying to catch up on all the chores. or letting them eat pizza rolls and taquitos for lunch everyday to give yourself a break (PTL FOR THE AIRFRYER)
lets make the most of the opportunities that we have.
let’s let the laundry go unfolded for days (in my case it was 4 loads for 1.5 weeks)
let’s let the kids nap with us for once (or in my case, on top of us, cheek to cheek..lol)
let’s grow in our ability to see the evidence of God’s grace
— even in the most unlikely places.
let’s be proactive in loving others, even if just virtually or from 6 feet away.
let’s just be faithful one day at a time.

give thanks: Eugene’s timely surgery date being the week before the COVID craze, friends who help drop off groceries (read: fresh veggies and the highly coveted chicken thighs!!!), extended time to spend with the kiddos, the joy of slowing down, quiet/alone time in the car which makes for the perfect opportunity to pray, reminders that nothing (including a single microscopic COVID virus, and all the unknowns and uncertainties of tomorrow) is out of God’s control and will.
